Warlords III, Reign of Heroes

Warlords III, Reign of Heroes is a pretty decent fantasy TBS game. Sadly, it only runs reliably in Windows 98.

To run Warlords III on modern hardware, you'll need:

- VirtualBox
- A Windows 98 install CD
- A Windows 98 product key
- Possibly a boot floppy for windows 98 (or even windows 95)
- Very likely, custom video drivers
- A copy of Warlords III, Reign of Heroes


The details of how to create a virtual machine running Windows 98 with VirtualBox are a bit out of scope here. Other people have done that and posted video of it on youtube. In short: if you can't boot from your install CD, boot from floppy and run fdisk to partition your virtual hard disk. Reboot, format it, and run setup.exe from the install CD. Enter your product key when asked.

When you try to run Warlords III it will complain about the screen bit depth, but before you can fix this, you'll need custom video drivers. You can download these at http://limemaster92.byethost15.com/2/virtual-machines/vbe9x-iso/.

Now you're all set, except for one thing: set video playback to "no video", unless you like to receive abuse from a a grownup man wearing a rubber mask whilst playing.
